The importance of the Christening Mug or Cup grew in The Victorian Era and, along with a Tankard or Can, was one of the most popular Christening or Baptism gifts for a boy.  The intention was for this valuable gift to be an object of financial security and for it to passed down through the child’s family as the years passed.

But why a cup or mug?

Drinking vessels have played a significant role throughout the history of mankind. They have been used since pre-historic times for all important ceremonies, from funeral and burying the dead to sealing deals and calling a truce.  Part of the Christening cup's legacy may come from the ritual of sharing a drink from a single cup, as in the Loving Cups and Grace Cups drunk at formal banquets and dinners. Trust and communal bonds are reaffirmed when drinking from the same cup and this is mirrored in the chalice and the Communion service in the Christian Church.
